Winter children
As I had feared, my children decided to pull a fast one and start emerging from their chrysalises before Spring. So far I have 4 adults in my largest enclosure. I have gotten the first two to feed on some Gatorade and tomorrow I'm going to the local garden center to see if they have any flowers available. Since I can't let my babies go outside I have to try to raise them entirely indoors. I'll have photos soon.

Re: Winter children
Oh, I hope there are flowers around....maybe even check a florist...
It's going to be exciting to watch them grow all winter!

Re: Winter children
I found flowers but they ignore them. So far I've been feeding them Gatorade by hand. 7 adults have emerged so far, though the first of them are reaching the end of their life span. It is sad to watch them die but it has to happen eventually. If I hadn't brought them in they would be dead already.

Re: Winter children
So far 8 of the 10 adults have emerged. 5 of those have passed on. The last caterpillar pupated yesterday. So now I have 3 adults and 2 pupa.

Re: Winter children
I'm down to my last two now. They are the only two that I gave names to. They are called Curly and Lucky. Sometimes I call Curly Curly Q. It is because when it emerged from the chrysalis the wings didn't form quite right. They were curved.

Re: Winter children
Heavens, there was a time when I named every butterfly that I raised.
My last two are now gone and I have saved them all to use for possible school visits. I'll choose the nicest ones for viewing under the microscopes.
