The 2011 count has started

I'm up to 5 species so far. After the Sleepy Orange came the Orange Sulphur, Checkered White, Pearl Crescent and Variegated Fritillary.

Awesome! So far I've seen some really dark, almost black ones go fluttering by, but not been able to get close to them...

I'm blowing last year away so far. As of the 10th I've confirmed 20 species compared to 7 last year. I'm very enthusiastic about this being a good year.

I'm up to 23 now despite the bad weather. The Hackberry group of butterflies have finally starting showing up so I'll be getting my fruit feeders updated. I think that raccoons have been eating the fruit that I've put out before now. My solution was to buy taller shepherd's hooks to hang the feeder trays on. I'll probably grease the poles too. Let's see them climb that. Maybe the butterflies will be able to see them better too.

I'm up to 27 now. The fruit feeders are doing a great job of bringing in the butterflies that like rotting fruit. I'm starting to wonder if birds may be eating some of that fruit too.

I know about the grape jelly. My sister puts it out for the Baltimore Orioles up there and other birds come in and eat it too. I'm yet to catch a bird in my fruit feeder but sometimes that fruit seems to go awfully fast.

Re: The 2011 count has started

There has been quite a dry spell for butterflies since June. I have gotten up to 30 species for the year, the last three being the Giant Swallowtail and Gulf Fritillary in June, then a Little Yellow three months later in August. It didn't even occur to me that I had a new sighting on Saturday. Today I checked the list and saw that I hadn't seen a Little Yellow yet.
