Could it be your horribly dry weather? It's been pretty bad there from what the news is reporting... emoticon

Re: The 2011 count has started

The drought has definitely had a negative effect on numbers. However now that the weather has changed I've suddenly jumped from 30 on August 20 to 36 as of today. Of the last 6, 3 were first evers. I'm only one away from tying last year's count. With my Frostweed about to bloom I should start seeing my Great Purple Hairstreaks with any luck. I've started putting the fruit out in the trays agin in hopes of luring in some Mourning Cloaks. So far I haven't seen much but a few Hackberry Emporers, a couple of Buckeyes which is odd in the feeders, and a boatload of Scarab Beetles. The beetles are pretty though, all metallic green, gold and sort of coppery colored. It is funny watching them crowd the hummingbird feeders too. I think that they get drunk on the high sugar content.

I've read that bees can get drunk oddly enough and I think I've seen it happen. One of the milkweed types that is native to this area is supposed to have a very high sugar content to the nectar. Insects can become intoxicated and will walk and fly erratically after feeding.

The two guys that were here to watch the house wouldn't know one butterfly from another. Oddly enough my hubby is beginning to be able to ID a few though.

Speaking of the beetles, I've often seen so many of them on one of my hummingbird feeders that it tips way to one side. I have to wonder if that is a tactic to get to more of the sugar water. Who says that insects have no intelligence.

I've seen birds drunk on over-ripe berries! LOL
And insects are incredibly intelligent! Think about how small creatures can overcome great Obstacles, that is not ONLY instinct working there.....

Yay. Last years record has been tied. The first Great Purple Hairstreak of the year showed up yesterday. Speaking of obstacles to overcome, I have a remarkable female Monarch that I've seen in the garden at least two days in a row now. She is missing one entire hindwing on one side yet she still flies with the best of them. I think that she has one tiny strip of the missing wing left though and it makes it possible to hear her wings flapping if she is close enough.

It turns out that my flight challenged Monarch was actually a male. With one hind wing missing it was much harder to tell, considering that the most identifying feature is on that set of wings. You'll probably laugh to know that I actually apologized the next time that I saw him.

It didn't seem any different than apologizing to a person that may have been insulted. Being polite can never be wrong. I greet them when I see them too. So far it looks like I'm going to end up with a tie for species this year. Sure wish I had some clue what kind of Winter to expect.
