I'm doing some gardening for me too

The butterflies aren't getting all of the benefits from the garden this year. Despite an early decision not to plant veggies for me this year I have done so anyway.

This year I'm planting much earlier and employing a few techniques from the Discovery Gardens in Dallas. I'm trying peas, beans, 2 kinds of carrots, brocolli, lettuce, beets and chives. The chives are actually for the pollinators though. Last year in Dallas I saw how many insects really enjoy nectaring on chives and decided to add some to my garden.

RedAnt is back living with us for a while and he wants to plant peppers and maybe tomatoes.

I've already been rewarded with little helpers from around the neighborhood. Every time that I go out to work I have a swarm of neighbor kids wanting to help. They actually argue over who gets to do what. I've done my little part to help show them the importance of tending the land.

I attended a workshop on composting on Saturday. It was wonderful. I'm scouring the yard looking for stuff that I can start a compost pile with.

So far I have peas, beans, carrots, beets and chives that have sprouted. I also built my cold frame but it is also going to serve as a sun shade when it gets too hot. All I have to do is switch the plastic cover for burlap. It was such an easy thing to make and didn't cost a lot. I think that I'm going to add a topic on how to make one very soon.

Lady, out of all the important things you do, that one thing may have the biggest impact on the future of the Earth. Teaching the Children the importance of caring for the Earth, the land, water, air....may lead one day in a world that can survive humans...and humans who simply are able to survive. emoticon
I'm glad your goodies are already starting to come up! It's still snowing in the mountains up here and in Montana and MN... emoticon

Re: I'm doing some gardening for me too

we had a hot spell, and I do mean hot, in March , here in England.
only having a small garden, and any veggies have to go in my trough

I got carried away and sowed some cucumber seeds... I love the cucumbers with gnarls on them... (not sure if you call them cucumbers)

they grew, then the cold weather came and there is now just one brave little seedling standing all alone.

now we have winds, lots of heavy showers and quite cold... oh dear!

the story of my seed sowing life.

Oh Nanny, I'm sorry your garden took a hit. After it warms back up, can you reseed or buy some small plants and replant your garden?

well I am sure that I will Queeny! I think gardeners, generally, have to be optimistic, don`t you agree!

Oh yes....gardeners are some of the most optimistic people I know.
I mean they plant in the Earth, then leave everything to Nature to work right....Wind, Water, Heat...everything. If one was not optimistic, one could not garden, for after one bad turn the person would go into serious depression! emoticon

If I had based my future efforts on how things went while I was in Fort Worth then I would never have tried again. Hardly anything grew for me while I was there.

I'm thankful to have the resources that I do with the people at Texas Discovery Gardens. Being friends with the chief horticulturist has been very beneficial. When I have a problem I ask him.
