Re: Cold frame instructions and photos

Well I'll tell you what. My homemade cold frames held up better than the greenhouse kits that I bought. I will never buy anything from that manufacturer again. They turned out to be nothing but cheaply made trash. The only thing that they've been good for is giving me a model to reconstruct the frame style using PVC. Then I would just have to buy plastic sheeting to make the cover.

Oh, that is too bad! emoticon
I had planned on using your plans, they looked simple and hardy. Like they'd stand up to weather really well! emoticon

I think that the rounded design of the homemade one had something to do with its durability. Less wind resistance. I still want to experiment with that design to see if I could devise some improvements. I'll let you know how that works out.

One thing that I am interested in doing is adding a screen panel at the top with a flap of plastic over it. That would give a way for me to let rain water in when it rains and also ventilation to keep it from getting too hot inside during the summer, simply by raising the plastic flap. It would be like the way they do windows in tents. The way I did the first ones the ends were open which let the bugs in. I will have to close off the ends next time. I'm thinking that maybe hot glue might be enough to hold the pieces together.

Hot glue should work as long as it does not melt the plastic.
I think those "windows" are a great idea, BTW!

It's all part of the experimentation process to see what works and what doesn't. Of course now it will be next year before I will really try.

Can't say how much saving I'll be able to do but the planning part is always there. It sounds like I have a volunteer to help with clean up now. The first bed is done. If we do a bit at a time maybe by Spring it will be done.

I had some help after that day too. Several neighbor kids came over and we really went to town. It isn't completely done but at least there is a big dent in the job.
