Double good news

Good timing was on my side this morning when I walked out to start my second watering cycle this morning. Just as I was walking past part of ther butterfly garden I startled a Giant Swallowtail that had been fluttering among the foliage. This is my first sighting for this species this year.

The second part of the good news is that it was a female and she layed eggs on one of my Hop Ash trees. I didn't try to get an exact count for fear of disturbing or damaging the eggs. Maybe she'll come back and I can get photos the next time. This was so unexpected that I didn't have time to do anything but watch.

Well as it turns out apparently I haven't been looking hard enough when checking my host plants. Today I found 5 Black Swallowtails, 8 Gulf Fritillaries and numerous eggs of the Fritillaries. I guess that somebody has been making whoopie in my garden.

Oh very much so. I've been finding caterpillars everywhere, including some that I've never seen before. I've taken photos to send to my entomologist buddy for identification.

I never mind a nice surprise. Now what I need to do is print out photos of what I want to have identified. I'll be over by the butterfly house the 2nd weekend in November to attend the fall plant sale.

Definitely taking the one of that moth along, plus at least 2 caterpillar shots. That reminds me that I had better track those photos down so that I can print them.
