Re: Double good news

I've seen signs of life in some of them but it's still early. The good thing is that the Spring plant sale is in April so I can stock up again if need be.

Re: Double good news

I've had mixed luck on plant sale days. One time it was raining and quite miserable. They have put out a preliminary plant list so I'll have to go over it before the sale.

The weather was great. The money was short. I also had two plants stolen while I was inside paying. Naturally I didn't discover it until I got home. By that time it was too late. It just had to be the two most expensive plants that I bought. I was furious. That has never happened in all of the times I've gone. Next time I'll have my helper stay outside to stand guard.

That is just so wrong!! And if they were the two most expensive ones, then someone was watching you or casing that place.....they knew what they were looking for. emoticon

It's really hard to say. Thankfully several of the Passionvine plants that were already in the garden have come back and are growing nicely. I'm just really surprised not to have any caterpillars on them. I haven't even seen any of my Gulf Fritillaries yet this year. The Variegated Fritillaries have started coming out again though so maybe I'll get caterpillars from them. They eat Passionvine too.

But perhaps it's not you....maybe something happened to them in their Wintering grounds, so that not as many came your direction.
I've only see but a handful of Monarch's this year....

Re: Double good news

I got a good explanation from my entomologist buddy. The Winter that we had is the reason behind the lack of Gulf Fritillaries. They are a tropical species so if we have very cold weather it kills them off and they have to repopulate from way down south. A mild Winter coupled with a lot of gardeners planting one specific Passionvine plant that is cold hardy can lead to them getting a jumpstart during those years.
