I had my very first House Finches
It is so funny that just after talking about House Finches with Queeny that I should finally see some here.
I had just gotten home the morning of the 8th of this month. As usual I checked the tree with the feeders just to see who was hanging around. I heard a song that I've never heard here before. That was when my eyes caught sight of the red throat and breast of my boy. I ran like a mad woman to get the camera from the house.
He was a perfect gentleman, allowing me to get several shots before flying away. No sooner had he left his perch and 3 more flew over, one of which landed in the same tree. Since then I've seen at least one female.

Oh, he's a beauty! I have several males and females at my feeder.
And it's wildly karma that we were talking about them..

Re: I had my very first House Finches
So maybe if we talk about something showing up at your new place then it will. I already mentioned in a post elsewhere that a little part of me will be going with you to encourage butterfly and hummingbird visitors.

Re: I had my very first House Finches
Yeah.....you mentioned it in my "going away party" at the Directory.
I've some bigger birds, that sort of look like a European Starling. But they DO NOT act like it. They don't attack the feeders, and clean it completely. Only a couple here and there will show up. I'm trying to get a picture, but I can't open my door yet...still to cold. And when I try to for picture they take off...and it does not show up much through the screens.

Re: I had my very first House Finches
I know all about the challenges you are having in photographing your birds. My feeders haven't been filled in a while so I haven't seen many around the house. I do need to get my hummingbird feeders filled though as their migration is well underway.

Re: I had my very first House Finches
Good call on that ID. Very nice shots there. I've never seen one of them before.
I broke down and really went hog wild on bird food. The seed feeders are full. I re-filled the suet feeders and got one of those hanging bell shaped seed treat things. It didn't take long for the swarm to find everything.

Re: I had my very first House Finches
The two seed feeders are already empty. I have been playing around with the idea of getting some freeze dried mealworms. There are supposed to be some birds that absolutely adore them.

Re: I had my very first House Finches
OH TOTALLY! Catbirds love them, and in NM the Roadrunners would come up under the feeders and I'd sprinkle the mealworms on the ground and they would go for them....Robins liked them too.
I found them at Petsmart and Wild Birds unlimited.
