Last year I discovered that my molasses traps worked wonderfully. All I need to do is search for the recipe again. It is simple and inexpensive, not to mention non-toxic. I'll out out more than two this year if they start to get bad. Now that I'm thinking about it I'll be sure to post the recipe here on the board. Down with grasshoppers!!!nondisclosed_email@example.com (PKCaptSun)Tue, 21 Jan 2014 02:59:33 +0000 Re: First caterpillar of 2013 foundhttps://bwingsofwonder.runboard.com/p5503,from=rss#post5503https://bwingsofwonder.runboard.com/p5503,from=rss#post5503Good Idea....nice to have a back up plan.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Queenyforever)Fri, 10 Jan 2014 12:09:59 +0000 Re: First caterpillar of 2013 foundhttps://bwingsofwonder.runboard.com/p5484,from=rss#post5484https://bwingsofwonder.runboard.com/p5484,from=rss#post5484My hope is that with a number of days that it got below freezing it will kill off some of the eggs for next years crop of hoppers. Just in case though I'm planning to buy more of the Nolo Bait that I got this year. I'll be putting it out earlier this time in order to catch them as they first start hatching.nondisclosed_email@example.com (PKCaptSun)Fri, 27 Dec 2013 02:44:34 +0000 Re: First caterpillar of 2013 foundhttps://bwingsofwonder.runboard.com/p5459,from=rss#post5459https://bwingsofwonder.runboard.com/p5459,from=rss#post5459Keeping the grasshoppers down is a plus! Our hard freezes took out all the rest of our gardens....but also got rid of the horrid flies we've had!nondisclosed_email@example.com (Queenyforever)Fri, 18 Oct 2013 13:41:48 +0000 Re: First caterpillar of 2013 foundhttps://bwingsofwonder.runboard.com/p5424,from=rss#post5424https://bwingsofwonder.runboard.com/p5424,from=rss#post5424We've hit a couple of rainy spells lately and the temps are going down quite pleasantly. The cooler weather seems to be keeping the grasshopper numbers lower and making more butterflies come out. The same thing happened last year around the same time.nondisclosed_email@example.com (PKCaptSun)Fri, 18 Oct 2013 06:59:43 +0000 Re: First caterpillar of 2013 foundhttps://bwingsofwonder.runboard.com/p5385,from=rss#post5385https://bwingsofwonder.runboard.com/p5385,from=rss#post5385I've been watching our temps here as compared to where our son is in Las Cruces, NM....we have been HOTTER ALL SUMMER than they have and they have had MORE RAIN! WOW! Is Mother Nature on a major turn? I say...oh heck yeah! nondisclosed_email@example.com (Queenyforever)Tue, 27 Aug 2013 10:13:23 +0000 Re: First caterpillar of 2013 foundhttps://bwingsofwonder.runboard.com/p5366,from=rss#post5366https://bwingsofwonder.runboard.com/p5366,from=rss#post5366Thankfully we've gotten out of the 100s for a bit but still little to no rain. I've set up a regular watering schedule now. On two days during the week I let the water go for 2 hours on the main sections of the garden. The small beds in the front get watered with the hose was the need becomes clear. Now if only the heat and dry conditions would drive the grasshoppers away. They are competing with my caterpillars for food.nondisclosed_email@example.com (PKCaptSun)Mon, 26 Aug 2013 03:51:08 +0000 Re: First caterpillar of 2013 foundhttps://bwingsofwonder.runboard.com/p5345,from=rss#post5345https://bwingsofwonder.runboard.com/p5345,from=rss#post5345We've had horrible heat here. AT least 15 to 20 degrees hotter than normal, and for an extended period of time. We occasionally reach 100 to 102....but we've been in triple digits up to 111 for most of July, and looks like it's going into August as well.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Queenyforever)Tue, 23 Jul 2013 12:35:17 +0000 Re: First caterpillar of 2013 foundhttps://bwingsofwonder.runboard.com/p5321,from=rss#post5321https://bwingsofwonder.runboard.com/p5321,from=rss#post5321They were definitely fun to raise. A new experience is always a pleasure. At least now I know what to look for in the future. With the heat and dry weather there haven't been many of any kind lately. Thankfully we did get a bunch of rain all week.nondisclosed_email@example.com (PKCaptSun)Fri, 19 Jul 2013 01:41:10 +0000 Re: First caterpillar of 2013 foundhttps://bwingsofwonder.runboard.com/p5299,from=rss#post5299https://bwingsofwonder.runboard.com/p5299,from=rss#post5299Hmmmmm, 'pup tent' caterpillars! Interesting to learn something new....sneaky little ones, are just going to surprise you at every turn!nondisclosed_email@example.com (Queenyforever)Tue, 02 Jul 2013 10:38:21 +0000 Re: First caterpillar of 2013 foundhttps://bwingsofwonder.runboard.com/p5279,from=rss#post5279https://bwingsofwonder.runboard.com/p5279,from=rss#post5279Well oddly enough it was my observation of the pupation of the caterpillars inside of the house that gave me a clue about something I'd seen outside a few days earlier. I was checking plants for caterpillars and found an odd looking little green critter that seemed to be in the middle of pupation. I left it alone and didn't think about it again until I saw what my indoor guys looked like when they started the pupation process. Of course I had to run outside to see if there was a chrysalis for me to find. There was, so I brought it inside too. I discovered an unusual thing about this species. The caterpillars make little tents to hide in out of leaves. That wasn't the odd thing. They also pupate inside of the shelter which made it hard for me to know what was happening with them.nondisclosed_email@example.com (PKCaptSun)Fri, 28 Jun 2013 06:34:08 +0000 Re: First caterpillar of 2013 foundhttps://bwingsofwonder.runboard.com/p5259,from=rss#post5259https://bwingsofwonder.runboard.com/p5259,from=rss#post5259Just read about them in the other topic.....LOL Good thing you noticed them!nondisclosed_email@example.com (Queenyforever)Mon, 10 Jun 2013 11:21:17 +0000 Re: First caterpillar of 2013 foundhttps://bwingsofwonder.runboard.com/p5241,from=rss#post5241https://bwingsofwonder.runboard.com/p5241,from=rss#post5241It is certainly the prettiest of the ones I've found around the yard. I did finally break the record for the smallest ones I've had. My mystery caterpillars form the smallest ones so far.nondisclosed_email@example.com (PKCaptSun)Sun, 09 Jun 2013 18:42:30 +0000 Re: First caterpillar of 2013 foundhttps://bwingsofwonder.runboard.com/p5178,from=rss#post5178https://bwingsofwonder.runboard.com/p5178,from=rss#post5178WOW! Their chrysalis is gorgeous too. Here is an example from a previous year. They are pearlescent and metallic. nondisclosed_email@example.com (PKCaptSun)Thu, 02 May 2013 07:11:27 +0000 Re: First caterpillar of 2013 foundhttps://bwingsofwonder.runboard.com/p5103,from=rss#post5103https://bwingsofwonder.runboard.com/p5103,from=rss#post5103Wow.....that is gorgeous! I've seen it growing in different parts of the yard every year. Now as promised here is my first caterpillar. Colorful isn't it? nondisclosed_email@example.com (PKCaptSun)Wed, 17 Apr 2013 07:50:39 +0000 Re: First caterpillar of 2013 foundhttps://bwingsofwonder.runboard.com/p5065,from=rss#post5065https://bwingsofwonder.runboard.com/p5065,from=rss#post5065Oh cool......awesome find and neat if that 'weed' was a native. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Queenyforever)Fri, 05 Apr 2013 14:27:26 +0000 First caterpillar of 2013 foundhttps://bwingsofwonder.runboard.com/p5056,from=rss#post5056https://bwingsofwonder.runboard.com/p5056,from=rss#post5056I don't know how I managed to overlook this caterpillar for so long. Over the last couple of weeks I have been checking the area where it was found for milkweed sprouts. Then on the 30th I found a large Variegated Fritillary caterpillar on this odd little weed that grows in the yard. I think that it is a native type of Flax. I'll have a photo to share once I get it posted.nondisclosed_email@example.com (PKCaptSun)Fri, 05 Apr 2013 08:11:50 +0000
