They were definitely fun to raise. A new experience is always a pleasure. At least now I know what to look for in the future. With the heat and dry weather there haven't been many of any kind lately. Thankfully we did get a bunch of rain all week.

We've had horrible heat here. AT least 15 to 20 degrees hotter than normal, and for an extended period of time.
We occasionally reach 100 to 102....but we've been in triple digits up to 111 for most of July, and looks like it's going into August as well.

Thankfully we've gotten out of the 100s for a bit but still little to no rain. I've set up a regular watering schedule now. On two days during the week I let the water go for 2 hours on the main sections of the garden. The small beds in the front get watered with the hose was the need becomes clear. Now if only the heat and dry conditions would drive the grasshoppers away. They are competing with my caterpillars for food.

I've been watching our temps here as compared to where our son is in Las Cruces, NM....we have been HOTTER ALL SUMMER than they have and they have had MORE RAIN!
WOW! Is Mother Nature on a major turn? I say...oh heck yeah! emoticon

We've hit a couple of rainy spells lately and the temps are going down quite pleasantly. The cooler weather seems to be keeping the grasshopper numbers lower and making more butterflies come out. The same thing happened last year around the same time.

Keeping the grasshoppers down is a plus! Our hard freezes took out all the rest of our gardens....but also got rid of the horrid flies we've had!

My hope is that with a number of days that it got below freezing it will kill off some of the eggs for next years crop of hoppers. Just in case though I'm planning to buy more of the Nolo Bait that I got this year. I'll be putting it out earlier this time in order to catch them as they first start hatching.

I even have a backup to the backup. Last year I discovered that my molasses traps worked wonderfully. All I need to do is search for the recipe again. It is simple and inexpensive, not to mention non-toxic. I'll out out more than two this year if they start to get bad. Now that I'm thinking about it I'll be sure to post the recipe here on the board. Down with grasshoppers!!!
