New family members

Once again I've gone off and done something weird. It had to have really confused a lady at the Calloway's Nursery when I told her I was buying specific plants because they did have caterpillars on them.

I was looking to replace some host plants that the grasshoppers ate down to nothing. They didn't have what I was specifically looking for but they did have another plant called Rue that I grow in my garden. It is a host plant for two different swallowtails. When looking them over I found a caterpillar. Of course I couldn't leave it there to be killed. Naturally I looked for more and found another plant with a cat.

Since bringing them home I have found two more. There must have been eggs that I didn't see. The big news is that one of the cats is of a species that I've wanted to raise since I started my hobby. It is a Giant Swallowtail. I think that two of the others may be Black Swallowtails. I'm going back for more plants so that I'll have enough to feed my new children. Definitely expect a progression of photos of that Giant Swallowtail as it develops.

So, you bought plants that you really were not going to buy, just to save the caterpillars....and the Universe has rewarded your love and kindness, by having those you saved be one of the ones you've always wanted.

Sometimes karma is amazing. ♥

My Giant is still going strong and boy has it gotten big. It definitely lives up to the name that I gave it. Yes I sometimes name my caterpillars and butterflies. This one's name is Titan.

Unfortunately these caterpillars did not fare well at all in the long run. I've never had this problem before so I'm left to wonder if those plants actually had something on them that was just very slow acting. It was quite heartbreaking to lose them when they seemed to be doing so well.

That's what I've been thinking. On a happier note though I did adopt a surprise child from the Fall plant sale that I attended in Dallas. One of my milkweed plants had a teeny tiny Monarch caterpillar on it. I succesfully raised my boy and released him a while back. I'll add pics once I have them online.

Sorry that the pics have been so long in coming. I've had too many projects going on at once but now I'm in a position to start working with photos again.
