Unusual sighting occurence for 2015
The first butterflies of the year were seen on the 28th of January. What made this day unique is that it was the first time that two different species appeared together for the first sighting of the year.

Which species were they?
And I saw on the news, it looked as though you all were terribly cold, are you?

Re: Unusual sighting occurence for 2015
They were a Sleepy Orange and an Orange Sulphur. Between those two they are usually the first species of the year. Both species overwinter as adults and will come out on days where it gets 60 degrees or above.
The weather here has been freakish to say the least. First we're buried in 2-3 inches of snow late last week then over this past weekend it was warm enough for butterflies to be out.

Re: Unusual sighting occurence for 2015
Okay, that is weird. On both accounts!
We never really got cold all Winter. I think the coldest was about 17 degrees, early one morning. And we only had about 10 inches of snow all Winter!
I liked it, but I don't think the irrigation is going to last all Summer. Could be spray painting the dirt green...

I don't recall what our coldest was. Right now we're getting rain quite frequently. It's making working in the garden quite impossible.
Had the third species of the year last weekend. It was a Question Mark.

Question Mark...is that a bright orange sucker with black spots?
We've been getting rain, then very warm, then windy, then colder, rain, warm, windy, colder, warm... Making all the plants pop...

Re: Unusual sighting occurence for 2015
The plants are going crazy here too. I didn't even realize that my Garden Phlox was in bloom. It's raining here again. I'm hoping that the storms come through later in the day on Saturday as I'm going to a butterfly gardening class in Dallas in the morning.
Below is a Question Mark, probably one of my best shots of one. It is a fairly fresh specimen as evidenced by the fact that the violet edging around the wings is clear.

Re: Unusual sighting occurence for 2015
No rain that day but I dodged a big bullet at the Spring plant sale. It wasn't until my friend Sean and I were driving home from picking up the new plates for his car that the sky opened up.
Speaking of Question Marks I have had a bumper crop this year. I don't remember ever having this many at one time. They have been enjoying my fruit feeders when it isn't raining. There have also been Red Admirals, Hackberry Emporers and Tawny Emporers at the feeders. With such an influx of winger visitors I was quite motivated to fix my second tray so that I could have two hanging up. I can't believe how hard I had to look to find a single paper clip at the house.
