Another very special first

For the first time since the garden was created the first Monarch sighting and the first hummingbird sighting happened on the same day.

I had been out fishing and had I come back any later than I did I would have missed both. Perhaps they were calling out to me and that's why I went home when I did?

So far I've seen very few more Monarchs and only found 3 eggs. The hummingbirds have been very regular though.

Ever since the over abundant rain I've been seeing more Monarchs. As a matter of fact I've seen more in the last couple of weeks than I saw all last year. They were fresh ones so they probably grew up in my garden without my ever seeing them until they were adults.

So very glad....the Monarchs need help. And to know you are seeing so many, is a good sign!

I'm still seeing them though I'm yet to find more caterpillars. I have plenty of milkweed but never seem to find the babies. Well I guess if I have a hard time then the predators do too.

Me too....

OH and speaking of Gardens. Next year I am not having a 'vegetable garden'...they just have way to many local farm stands with some awesome veggies....that mine pale in comparison.
So I was thinking of taking that area and planting a 'butterfly' or 'hummer' garden or combo of both.
But I don't want it structured, more like a wild flower garden.
The area is about...guessing here....maybe 5 feet deep and 8 feet across....kind of at an angle...across a "corner".
What should I plant in there, and how many plants could something like that handle?
I don't want maintenance.....more wild, like.
