The most fabulous first time event yet

It took 8 years for it to happen but I finally got a long time wish to come true. Just over a week ago I was cleaning up in the garden and along came a swallowtail. It spent a good deal of time investigating one of my patches of White-veined Dutchman's Pipevine. I was fairly sure it was a female Pipevine Swallowtail but she didn't seem to be laying any eggs.

My hopes seemed to be about to be dashed again when all of a sudden she landed and appeared to be laying eggs. I was able to get the camera from inside and got photos to confirm my suspicions.

Once she left I checked and found 10 eggs. A few days lated I found another group of about 10-12. The total has continued to grow to the point where I estimate that I may have as many as 40-50.

The first two clusters of eggs have hatched and I'm checking my new children every day.

This is the very first year that I've had Pipevine Swallowtail babies, despite having massive amounts of host plants and seeing adults in the yard. I'm practically delirious with joy.

I have plans to gather a few to raise in one of my enclosures and release once the adults emerge.

The big anouncement now is the emergence of the first three adults from the ones I collected to finish raising. The funny thing is that they've all been females so far. There is another one that should be emerging any day now plus the four that I took in later.

I have also found three other chrysalises attached to different parts of my house. Two are low enough to the ground to watch closely. The third one is near the roof line.

Then the other day I found a load more small caterpillars on the Pipevine that grows around the railing of my back patio. Boy oh boy did I get my wish for this species. I've had to start moving cats to different plants just so they have something to eat.

The males were the last to emerge. Just like the boys to keep the girls waiting. The ratio ended up just about even in the end. I have a large established population in the area now. I'm wondering if it will carry over to next year.

The funny thing is that in nature the males usually emerge first so that they are ready to ambush the poor females.

There is a bit of new news that completely slipped my mind until the story changed. Often times I find chrysalises in odd places. I have an old cat carrier on my back patio. Not long after releasing all of my adults I found 3 chrysalises in the carrier, attached to the door.

Not knowing if they were viable or not I just propped the door open and let nature take its course. I watched and watched and nothing seemed to be happening for weeks and weeks. Then yesterday I walked out and discovered that two of the three had emerged. I'm so thankful that I opened that door or they would have been trapped.

Oddly enough I think that I've grown more observant as I've gotten older. I know that I'm much more appreciative of my surroundings that I was when I was younger.
