There are plenty more where those came from. I've been making good use of the weirdly mild weather here, cleaning up the beds as they get their upgrades. It sure is nice to have a good weed trimmer now, one that doesn't need to be plugged in. I got a Husqvarna gas trimmer and it really chews through stuff.

That first one is a type of Monarda, also known as Beebalm. I have two large patches of it in one bed in front of the house. It looks amazing when it's all in bloom.

I'll bet it does. Does it smell good?

I've heard that it does. My sense of smell isn't all that it could be. Monarda is in the Mint family and has a number of medicinal uses especially among some Native American tribes.

Wonderful! Perhaps I will look into planting some. I love a double or triple duty flower! emoticon

Re: Flowers and Plants

Here is an excerpt from Wikipedia on its uses.

Several species, including Monarda fistulosa and M. didyma, have a long history of use as medicinal plants by many Native Americans, such as the Blackfoot, Menominee, Ojibwa and Winnebago. The Blackfoot recognized the strong antiseptic action of the plants, and used them in poultices for skin infections and minor wounds. North American Indians, and later settlers, also used it to alleviate stomach and bronchial ailments. A tisane made from the plant was also used to treat mouth and throat infections caused by dental caries and gingivitis. Bee balm is a natural source of the antiseptic compound thymol, the primary active ingredient in some modern commercial mouthwash formulas. The Winnebago used a bee balm tisane as a general stimulant. Bee balm was also used as a carminative herb by Native Americans to prevent excessive flatulence.[8] An infusion of crushed, boiled Monarda has been used to treat headache and fever.

Although somewhat bitter due to the thymol content in the leaves and buds, the plant tastes like a mix of spearmint and peppermint with oregano. Bee balm was traditionally used by Native Americans as a seasoning for wild game, particularly birds. The plants are widespread across North America and can be found in moist meadows, hillsides, and forest clearings up to 5,000 feet (1,500 m) in elevation.[8]

I will definitely be checking....as I have decided to turn my old garden area in to a butterfly, bird area....with different flowers and a bird bath...kind of out of the way, so it's not like we will be able to see it, but the critters certainly will. It's next to the fence, so extra warmth there...sun from early morning till about 1pm. And it's under the overhanging branches of a large tree on the other side of the fence.
Should be cool....
