First 2009 Caterpillar Sighted
I was about to pull up a stray Passionvine sprout on the 14th of this month when I noticed a large Gulf Fritillary caterpillar on it. The wonderful thing about this is that not only was it the first caterpillar sighting, it came from the first egg sighting and I thought I had lost it to a predator. It was gone the next day so my guess is that it crawled off to pupate. I have since found 2 more tiny GF caterpillars on other sprouts that I was going to pull up. Both cats are now happily munching on one big plant that I left where it is for now.

Re: First 2009 Caterpillar Sighted
You're quite welcome. Neato is perfectly acceptable. This caterpillar varies quite a bit in the proportion of each color. I've seen some that are mostly slate gray with only a little orange and white. I'm not sure what causes the differences. The bright color does make them easier to see when they are bigger. I have since found several more of mixed sizes. One will be going with me on Wednesday to do another presentation at my friend's school. They make wonderful ambassadors to the students.

Re: First 2009 Caterpillar Sighted
What is weird is that even the girls in the classes like the caterpillars. My friend ended up asking if they could keep the cats in the class for an extra day since one of them was about to form its chrysalis. One of the classes actually got to watch it happen. Then I went in to pick them up the next day and another caterpillar was about to pupate. I don't move them at all during that time if I can help it so another class got to see that part of the transformation sice I left them one more day.

Re: First 2009 Caterpillar Sighted
I keep hoping that the butterfly garden that they've built at the school will start to yield some caterpillars. There is nothing quite like being able to follow the whole process from start to finish.
Oh, that one plant that I wanted to pull has become this major focal point for the butterflies. Every time I think that it is okay to pull it I find a new crop of caterpillars.

Re: First 2009 Caterpillar Sighted
I hope the schools garden puts on a good show too! Nothing like seeing the real thing to give kids a strong love of nature.....
And I'm glad you never pulled that 'plant'!
