Mulch it
I know very little when it comes to gardening but one thing I have figured out is that a lot of the land we use now has been farmed to death and so the soil itself needs to be replenished.
Make sure you mulch a new area or at least till the soil before starting and the results are awesome

Re: Mulch it
You should be careful how deeply that you till the soil or you may release dormant weed seeds.
Organic mulch does break down and provide nutrient material for the soil but its primary purpose is moisture conservation and weed control.
There are a number of types of mulch, both organic and non-organic available to suit individual preferences and garden designs. Some are chemically treated to repel insects or retard weed growth while others like cedar mulch and eucalyptus mulch are supposed to do the same without added chemicals.

Re: Mulch it
Have either of you used that cocoa bean husks as mulch?
Hubby and I used it around our lilacs one year....it smells AWESOME! Makes you want to eat a hershey's bar!
But we had some problems with it Molding after it rained. Especially if it rained.....like once a week for a month (not allowing it to dry out between rains), which it did often in MN. OR if it rained really hard, it floats easily and so we'd have to rake it out of the grass and put it back!
So beware of where you use it...

Re: Mulch it
I haven't tried that. Lately I've been using Eucalyptus mulch. Sorry if I spelled that wrong. It is supposed to have added insect repelling properties without having chemicals added. Another thing that I am going to be trying, mostly to deter cats, is pecan shell mulch. Supposedly cats don't like walking on the sharp edges. I wonder if they would deter slugs and snails as well for the same basic reason, like the eggshells.

Re: Mulch it
I definitely like things with more than one benefit. I've been meaning to get out and refresh the mulch in a few areas before the cold really sets in here.

Re: Mulch it
I take it by using the Pecan shell Mulch, you all have abundant pecan orchards there too.
They seem to be everywhere here!

Re: Mulch it
They are everywhere in Texas. I used to have trees in the yard when I was living in Ft Worth. The mulch is store bought this time as I don't have any trees of my own.

Re: Mulch it
We have them all over here....acres and acres of them!
And you can get pecans at all the farmers markets, cheap.

Re: Mulch it
If I remember correctly Pastor Rick's mom has pecan trees in her yard. I may have to see if I can gather some there. Plus since I only really want the shells it won't matter if the nuts are bad.
