Winter help for our bird friends

Winter is already upon many of us, though I have yet to feel its chilly grip. Just as the season is tough for human kind, so it is for the birds that choose not to migrate.

There are simple things that can be done to ease the challenges they face. Food is a huge issue during the Winter. It is one of the easiest for us to accomodate.

For instance, if you grow flowers during the year and they happen to produce seeds, try to leave them alone a while longer when doing end of season cleanup. Sunflowers and Purple Coneflowers among others are greatly appreciated by seed eating birds.

Some birds actually love a little peanut butter smeared on the trunk of a tree. There are recipes to be found for homemade suet treats or there is the store bought type. Of course there is also the traditional bird feeder filled with seed and or fruit mixes.

I had to get permission to hang a "thistle seed" feeder up....they don't like regular seed feeders because they attract so many pigeons...but I have my thistle feeder up now.. emoticon

Darned pigeons. Hopefully the feeders that you have will yield results. I finally filled my two suet feeders though I don't think the birds have caught on to them yet. The seeds from the regular feeder are going like hotcakes however.

So far I have seen Eastern Meadowlarks, Cardinals, various Sparrows, Starlings, Crows, Cowbirds and others that I can't identify off the top of my head.

I do too but at least now I have learned that there is more than one kind of Sparrow. Now I can actually identify some of them. That has been one of the most fun parts of feeding the birds. I like to learn what they are. A coulple of visitors that I did forget to mention was the Red-winged Blackbirds and Mourning Doves.

We have morning Doves but they just wander around under the thistle feeder picking up the dropped bits!
And I heard the strangest bird last week.....been looking online for pictures and the only one that comes close is the Red-naped Sapsucker picture....I swear that is what I saw! Danged if I did NOT have my camera with me... emoticon
And I believe besides the different Sparrows, I had several Hermit Thrush come too...and different Finches....

It sounds like you have a nice variety. My birds are mad at me because I haven't been able to afford to go out and buy more food. All that is left is part of each of the suet feeders and they are going fast.

I have seen more hawks but none were close enough to get photos.

That sounds familiar. Mine get on the very edge of the roof line and I can hear the tiny claws scraping. It is kind of creepy. I keep thinking of the old Alfred Hitchcock movie.
