Re: I'm starting a new rock garden

The plant sale in Dallas was a huge disappointment. Their plant list was majorly inaccurate. Almost everything on my list was something they didn't have. Hopefully the sale at the botanical gardens near my work will have something.

oh how disappointing.. I was hoping for some good news ...

I think our Spring has been a great washout. so the plants are all a bit dismal.

Re: I'm starting a new rock garden

I'm happy to say that the smaller sale that I went to today was actually much nicer. While they didn't have the same quantity and variety of plants, I did find 13 to bring home and got a free bonus tree. The funny thing is that I found one of the ones that I was wanting from the first sale and paid less for it. Overall the prices were better, the condition of the plants was better and there was no shortage of help. Luckily the rain held off until just as I was leaving, unlike the sorry sale in Dallas where I got quite wet.

Now I have 24 total plants to get in the ground. As much as I was hoping for rain now I wish it would stop long enough for planting.

Once I got to digging holes I sure knew how little rain that we've had. There is nothing quite like dried out clay soil. It has been like digging in concrete.

I bought 4 more plants and some more of my mail order ones came in. All in all between the sales and other purchases the total was 40. I've gotten all but 6 planted so far.

Re: I'm starting a new rock garden

After waaiting for weeks for the last of my plant order to be shipped I got an e-mail stating that I wouldn't be getting them at all and they refunded the charges.

That left me with the problem of finding suitable replacement plants much later in the season than I wanted. Many garden centers start cutting back on inventory around this time.

I got lucky though. There are two Calloway's Nursery locations very close to where I work. I took a chance and stopped by one last week. The reward was wonderful. They had a selection of ground covers that I'd never seen anywhere else and they were on sale. I picked up two yellow blooming and two blue blooming varieties and plan to go back for some more to replace some plants that failed to survive. These plants are soooooo cute. I can hardly wait to see them in full bloom.

looking forward to seeing pictures in due course!

I feel for our Garden Centres and Nurseries, the weather has been quite cold and very wet, after a hot and dry March. very unusual weather here.. and even if they have managed to keep the plants going and the seeds to germinate, I don`t think the customers have been buying as much as we would usually do... most of our gardens are a washout this year.

PK...I'm so glad you were able to pick up some replacement plants. It will be fun seeing how they turn out!
You asked and the Universe responded...kind of hard to be specific in amounts though... emoticon

NANNY..seems your area had the opposite problem as PK'S...too much moisture! (At least hers in the beginning)
I hope you get somethings at least... emoticon

The luck has been mixed. The succulents seem to be doing much better so I may have to invest in more of them even if they aren't the exact color I wanted. I have to have something that will live. The good news is that the sedums that I bought much earlier are doing fine and starting to bloom. The butterflies visit regularly.
