Crazy Cardinal invasion
A while back I had one of the wildest bird sightings that I've ever had. PR was excited because he saw one Cardinal in the tree outside of our back door.
I told him that I usually see more than that in the mornings when I come in from work. A couple of minutes later I heard one in the tree by the front yard. I went to the window to look out and saw one. Naturally I wanted photos so I grabbed a camera and very carefully opened the front door.
Shooting through the glass was difficult especially with it being dirty. A couple more Cardinals showed up so I decided to see if I could clean the glass without scaring them off. They seemed content to stay put.
The next thing I knew I had a swarm of them in the tree, both males and females. At one point I could visually confirm as many as 9. There could easily have been more since my field of view was limited. I've never seen this many in one place before.
Now on to the pics.

Re: Crazy Cardinal invasion
Oh my gosh.....that is amazing. Do they migrate? Possible they were passing through. OR maybe getting away from the rest of the U.S. who has had horrid weather since the beginning of the year!
Awesome photos BTW. ♥

Re: Crazy Cardinal invasion
Whatever the reason, I've had more Cardinals this year than any other. I literally see them every day, though not as many at one time. There are some of them that will stay in the tree even when I'm as close as about 3-4 feet away. I just stand there and talk to them. Right now I'm contemplating some way to hide myself while I'm outside just to get more pics. Here are some more from that day.

Re: Crazy Cardinal invasion
Wow, those are incredible....maybe your talking to them, sort of puts them in a trance or "soothes" them. I've heard of people who can do that with other critters....

Re: Crazy Cardinal invasion
I'm actually starting to be able to get even closer to some of them. Lately I'm starting to think that they are timing their visits to the time when I get home in the morning. Do you suppose that they recognize me as a provider?

It's a possibility. They are very smart birds.

Re: Crazy Cardinal invasion
There was a good mutual scare a little while back. I had just gotten home in the morning and went walking up toward the porch. There were some sparrows in the tree and I was talking to them. Then all of a sudden a male Cardinal bursts up off of the porch no more than 2 or 3 feet away. I don't know how I missed seeing him.
