Recipes for garden remedies
I decided that it was a good time to share some recipes that I've found for organic pest control and other garden goodies. I'm starting with something that I've actually used and had good luck with. It is a trap for grasshoppers.
Mix 1 cup of molasses, 1/2 cup of canola oil and 9 cups of water. Use this mixture to partly fill your choice of containers. Dig a hole in the ground deep enough so that the top of your container sits at soil level. Make sure that the container you choose is deep enough to keep the grasshoppers from easily jumping out. I actually used the small plastic 3 gallon bathroon size trash cans, but large glass jars will work and I would imagine gallon milk jugs with the top cut off would as well.
The grasshoppers are attracted by the sweet smell of the molasses. When they jump in they become coated with the molasses and oil and drown. The addition of the canola oil is supposed to deter mosquitos and I would imagine that it helps smother the hoppers too.

Perfect!! Just perfect.....such a natural remedy. Copy/saved that one. Might just need it and then I won't be able to remember where I read it!

I'm about to mix up two batches. The baby hoppers are out in force despite all of the freezes over the Winter. I haven't been able to afford to buy any of the Nolo Bait yet. Cursed grasshoppers.

It did work but I think that something else was getting into the containers to drink the sweet stuff. The mixture seemed to disappear awfully fast. We do have four legged critters that could have had a sweet tooth.
