The first 2014 butterfly finally arrives

Disappointment was the mood for all of January and most of February. Despite a number of warm, sunny days there were no butterfly sightings in the yard. During other years I had sightings in January.

The very last day of February was lovely here. I went outside for something and there were Orange Sulphurs galore. The challenge came in getting close enough and having one stay still long enough for a photo. This butterfly is now counted as 2014's first.

The temps here have been bouncing around like crazy. It will be in the 80s one day and then the 30s the next. I'm expecting hummingbirds maybe by the end of the month. The migration has started and they've already been seen further south.

Around the end of the month I have my first local butterfly excursion planned. I'll be going out to the national grasslands to see if I can catch a couple of the very early Spring species that are only active for a few weeks to maybe a couple of months.

According to the current forecast the weather is supposed to be amazing. I'll be going to the grasslands on Friday and a class on local native plants at the botanical gardens where the butterfly house is. I'm guaranteed to see butterflies one way or another, plus I'll get free plants from the class. I paid for a friend to attend the class too so I can get extra plants. Not only do we each get one to take home the day of the class, we get a coupon apiece for a free 1 gallon plant from the Spring plant sale.

I certainly got proof that the weather is changable in Texas. It was mostly cloudy until just before I had to leave. Despite the gloomy skies I had a decent number of sightings. The plant sale went reasonably well, though money was tight so I had to be thrifty. So far the new plants are doing well.
